The final round of the “Yalova Is My City” Knowledge Competition, organized to enhance students’ civic awareness and their understanding of history and culture in Yalova, was held on May 8, 2026, hosted by the Yalova Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Our Department Vice Chair, Dr. Cihan Yalvar, participated in the event as a jury member and chair of the jury panel. As part of the competition, which aimed to introduce Yalova’s historical, cultural, and natural riches to middle school students, 7th and 8th-grade students from public and private middle schools across Yalova had the opportunity to showcase their knowledge and cultural understanding. Schools that succeeded in the district-wide competitions following school-level preliminaries competed in the final round for top rankings.
During the final program, students engaged in a fierce competition by answering questions prepared on Yalova’s history, cultural heritage, geographical features, and social values. At the conclusion of the competition, the winning teams were awarded prizes, and it was emphasized that a significant step had been taken toward fostering students’ sense of belonging to the city and their historical awareness. Dr. Cihan Yalvar, Assistant Professor and Chair of the Judging Panel, highlighted the importance of students getting to know the city they live in and gaining awareness of local culture. He noted that such events contribute to strengthening a sense of city identity, historical awareness, and belonging among the younger generation. The event concluded with strong participation from students, teachers, and officials.
