Our Department Vice Chair Attended a Symposium

Our Department Vice Chair, Dr. Cihan Yalvar, participated in the symposium titled “The Seven Faces of Bursa: From Conquest to the Republic,” organized by the Bursa Osmangazi Municipality as part of the 21st Osman Gazi Commemoration and Bursa Conquest Day events. Our faculty member presented a paper titled “Traces of the Kuman-Kipchak in Bursa and Its Surroundings During the Early Ottoman Period” at the symposium. In his presentation, he demonstrated that the demographic structure of Bursa and its surroundings during the early Ottoman period cannot be explained solely by local factors, and that the presence of the Cuman-Kipchaks in the region can be traced through written sources, place names, and cadastral records. Emphasizing that the migration movements toward northwestern Anatolia during the Ottoman founding period directly influenced the settlement pattern around Bursa, our faculty member noted that the Kuman-Kipchaks played an active role in the formation of early Ottoman society at the military, social, and settlement levels.
It was also stated that evaluations based on early Ottoman chronicles, endowment records, and place names indicate that Bursa possessed a multi-layered social structure shaped by the contributions of various Turkic tribes in the post-conquest period. In this context, it was emphasized that traces of the Kuman-Kipchaks should be assessed not merely as a limited military element but at the level of permanent settlement and cultural influence.

While the data presented by our faculty member is considered to offer the potential to reinterpret the history of early Ottoman settlements in Bursa and its surroundings, it was noted for providing a new perspective on the existing literature regarding the region’s founding period. In this regard, the paper was assessed as making a direct contribution to the ongoing discussions regarding the role of Turkish tribes in Anatolia during the Ottoman founding period.
