The latest book by our department chair, Prof. Dr. Mehmet GÜNEŞ, titled “Municipality: Local Governments from the Ottoman Era to the Republic,” has been published by VakıfBank Cultural Publications. In the book, our professor discusses the historical development of services provided by municipalities in Istanbul and the provinces—such as public works, health, sanitation, and lighting—beginning with the Şehremaneti, which emerged as Istanbul’s municipal administration in 1855. This work, which draws heavily on archival sources as well as the local press and regulations of the period, serves as the final volume in the series on local governance—comprising our professor’s previously published works from the same publisher: “Governor’s Office: Provincial Administration from the Ottoman Empire to the Republic,” “District Governor’s Office: Sanjak and Kaza Administration from the Ottoman Empire to the Republic,” and “Village Headman’s Office: Village and Neighborhood Administration from the Ottoman Era to the Republic,” all published by the same publisher, and serves as the culmination of the local government series.
